My curiosity into wellbeing started with my daughter and her constant problems with her nose and throat and the potential threat of her having an operation to remove her tonsils and her adenoids at the age of 2. She had been using nebulisers and inhalers as well as having constant steroids since she was 6 months old, and having been given a date for surgery, in desperation we turned to homeopathy in the hope we could help her both sleep through the night and allow her to breathe properly without resorting to surgery.
That was now over 17 years ago and not only did she not have the operation, but she has not used inhalers or nebulisers for years. She does however have a resistance to traditional medicine and of ‘needles’ !
In truth however, my daughter’s ‘dis-ease’ was infact my opportunity to find out who I really was and it was the unravelling of me that was really needed in order to help her. Until I came across Functional Medicine, I too had ‘suffered’ a catalogue of physical symptoms pretty much since birth including: asthma, eczema, IBS, glandula fever, chronic fatigue and arthritis. I had also attempted an overdose at 22 when I found myself jobless, living in a bedsit, broke and frightened, been tested for cancer at 22, suffered severe post natal depression and had a termination for medical reasons at 18 weeks.
Until then, I had assumed my ‘conditions’ were just ‘bad luck’ and would never have guessed there was a common thread to it all. Even the overdose had been ‘pigeon-holed’ into a blip and one I had never truly discussed with anyone. After all they had certainly not stopped me from working around the world, running an IT company, and living the ‘high life’ of the 80’s and 90’s and to the outside world I ‘had it all’ and was just ‘lucky’. Clearly however it turned out I had an awful lot of onion layers that needed unraveling in order to find the truth of me and in turn fully connect with my own mind, body and soul. It was only then that I was in a position to find my own wellbeing balance so I could then really start to live an ‘abundant’ life, whatever that meant to me.
What I discovered was that all of my ‘dis-ease’ stemmed from deep seated ‘trauma’ and PTSD, which at the root of it all was a very weak immune system, under which was a completely de-regulated central nervous system. None of which I had any idea existed, and all of which had begun right from even before my entry into this world. All of which was ‘fixable’ through functional medicine and my own alignment with me.
From my own experiences I have learnt so much about epigenetics, the central nervous system, our vagus nerve and how when it comes to our wellbeing, everything is about the cell to soul connection and our perception of the world around us. Unraveling our onion layers can indeed be painful but they also set us free. Learning to align with ourselves not only means we are healthy in mind, body and soul but it also enables us to live the life we love, if we are bold enough to imagine and brave enough to claim it. We will however always require a helping hand every now and then.
These days you will find me living in a beautiful farmhouse in the Sussex Downs with my husband of 23 years, 3 children aged 19,17 and 14, a dog called Wellington and a cat named Boo. I am incredibly grateful to now be healthy in mind body and soul but it is never something I take for granted and I am constantly looking to learn and grow. I am a qualified wellbeing life coach with diploma’s in Mindfulness and CBT and am currently doing a nutrition one. I also use Edutherapy with my work.
I am also an Ambassador at St Peter and St James Hospice to help with raising awareness of the hospice’s work not only for end of life care but also for those living with cancer, as well as my private work I also work within the NHS working with children and young people with serious mental health problems and eating disorders. I am constantly learning and seeing how functional medicine can help us all live well for longer no matter what our starting point.
My non negotiable’ s include daily exercise, drinking water, walking Wellington, my own cell to soul connection, acupuncture, and massage. I love yoga too but it’s not a non negotiable; and it is all mixed with a healthy dose of cappuccinos, hearty meals with good wine and precious time with my friends and family. As well as surrounding myself with people who accept me for being me and who inspire me to constantly evolve and grow. I am indeed ‘lucky’.
Our wellbeing really is in our hands, we just need to be brave enough to face the truth of ourselves, own this and allow ourselves to live as Brene Brown would say ‘ shamelessly wholeheartedly’. By doing this not only do we take responsibility for our our lives but we gain our freedom to really live well too. Our perception today is vital to our body chemistry of tomorrow and it is when we choose to do the work that we take the ‘hard work’ out of life and replace it with trust and syncronicty.
It is always vital to remember we cannot cannot change what we did not know before, we can simply do good with what we know now. And when it comes to finding our wellbeing balance it is about unraveling the layers of an onion one layer at a time whilst being kind, compassionate and patient with ourselves whilst we do it.
Part of my purpose now is to help ensure the generation we are now raising, grow up knowing how to identify their own truth not what they inherit and how to be resilient in the world. By doing this they can thrive not just survive this game called life, and enjoy the ride.
To do this we must help them to learn to listen to their instinct and come out of their ‘minds’ long enough to align it with their hearts and souls. In essence make a healthy gut, brain connection but remain fully connected to our own bodies because when we are we allow far more than we control and we connect far more than we choose distraction.
I believe that by doing this not only can they stay healthy in mind body and soul for longer but they can create lasting ripple effects in the world they live in. The universe is a powerful place, if we can only learn to both respect and evolve with it not against it and if we are to help save our planet it is perhaps with ourselves that’s a good place to start.
Together with the amazing coaches and therapists we are incredibly grateful to work alongside, we hope to guide you to be curious in your own worlds and help you to find the answers you need to sleep well at night and stay well for longer.
