This is a somewhat yet not entirely surprising article about nurses within the NHS. Compassion and empathy is one of the greatest healers and is so vital for people to recover and thrive. Whilst this article is aimed at the mental health sector I cannot help but think that many more nurses that trained because they care are becoming immune to the art of compassion and perhaps having it drummed out of them completely. If we are talking about retraining them perhaps it is time to look at the bigger picture too
‘The government is focused on us meeting targets but we have no resources. The precious commodity of time no longer exists for us. My trust has introduced training days on compassion as if this was something that could be taught. That’s why most of us went into nursing. Please do not drown us in a sea of targets, statistics and paperwork. Please do not take away our time to be compassionate. I left my nursing career in 2014 and still grieve for the NHS I knew in 1997.’
